Nonviolent Communication Inmate Peer Training

We empower graduates of the Inmate and Post-release Nonviolent Communication Education program to pursue becoming Nonviolent Communication teachers through our 3-year Nonviolent Communication Inmate Peer Training.

A woman with long brown hair, wearing a striped shirt, stands in front of a seated audience speaking or presenting, with attendees attentively listening.

Teachers who have lived experience deeply understand the challenges and contexts of the prison system, and the transformative impacts of Nonviolent Communication, making them exceptional leaders for relevant and effective training. We believe our Nonviolent Communication Inmate Peer Training creates more trust and credibility across our programs because our participants can see themselves reflected in organizational leadership. Representative leaders also bring unique perspectives that help anticipate issues and identify opportunities that make our programs stronger.

Program Structure

Year 1: Peer trainers observe classes and provide support (48 weeks over 15 months)

Year 2: Qualified participants serve as co-facilitators

Year 3: Qualified participants lead classes under supervision

Graduates become OPP Certified Nonviolent Communication Trainers and receive support for international Center for Nonviolent Communication certification and business development upon community reentry.

Currently, 10 inmates participate in the Peer Training Program, with five serving as co-facilitators or lead trainers at Oregon State Penitentiary.
